Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP Leather Preservative (4 oz) — Leather Salve
Product description
What you get: a 4 oz tin of Heavy Duty LP Leather Preservative, a dense beeswax/propolis suspension blended with natural oils and designed for heavy-duty leather care.
Materials and formula: the salve is made from natural beeswax and propolis suspended in time-release oils. It contains no harsh chemicals, no softeners or sealers that can weaken leather fibers. The product is non-toxic and virtually odorless, formulated to feed leather with natural oils while allowing the material to breathe.
How it works: applied by rubbing into the leather, the waxy blend releases lubrication over time to soften and restore fibers. Heat (body warmth or brief sun exposure) helps the salve soften and penetrate. Multiple thin coats are often used, worked in and excess wiped away for a uniform finish.
What it treats: made to preserve, protect and restore work boots, jackets, belts, furniture and car seats, saddles and tack, and other rugged leather items. It replenishes dried or sun-faded leather and helps resist scuffing, abrasion, stitch tear and premature cracking.
Protection and resistance: formulated to penetrate and keep leather moisturized while repelling water, acid, petroleum, salt and many chemicals. Field-tested by wildland firefighters and manufactured in the USA, this preservative is intended for severe conditions and prolonged use.
Pros
- Deeply conditions and restores heavy-use leather
- Provides water and chemical resistance
- Natural beeswax formula without harsh chemicals
Cons
- Can darken lighter leathers
- Not suited to sealed or factory-finished leather
- May require several applications on very dry items
VerdictA concentrated, all-natural leather preservative designed for rugged leather that needs deep conditioning and durable water and chemical resistance. It’s ideal for untanned or open-grain leather used in boots, saddles, jackets and heavy gear. Expect some darkening on lighter hides and multiple coats for very dry leather, but for long-term protection and softened, more flexible leather this formula

Brought my boots back after a few coats
Exactly what I needed. After a few applications it revived my boots, covered scuffs and rejuvenated the leather. It does deepen the color, so expect darkening. Smells like natural beeswax and spread easily using a glove.

Still using the original jar years later
I bought mine years ago and it’s lasted forever. I reserve it for heavy-duty gear and apply a coat every few months, warming the leather then working the salve in and wiping the excess. Keeps duty gear conditioned, supple and ready for rough use.

Revived a vintage leather jacket
It brought an old leather jacket back to life and I expect a few more years of wear. I’ll reapply occasionally to keep it in good condition. Also restored the color on a leather bag.

Dependable protector for boots and welts
I apply by hand to warm the salve so it spreads easier, focusing on welts and seams. It darkens leather slightly but preserves it from water, paint and chemicals. The balm-like texture works well when excess is rubbed off with a towel.

Great for shoes, a chair and an old glove
Revived my shoes and improved an old leather chair’s pliability. Even my neglected baseball glove felt almost new after one application. The salve is waxy and melts with body heat; it may darken leather and can be a bit thick to remove from fabric.

Impressive, long-lasting protection
A little goes a long way and the results last. Left leather feeling soft without oily residue and the scent is pleasant. Applied to a notebook cover and a pair of boots weeks ago and both still feel conditioned and water-resistant.

Excellent protector for leather goods
Moisturizes and protects leather well. Used it on a jacket that regained richer color, on shoes and my wallet. No surprise it’s regarded as a top product for protecting leather items.

Impressed — I’ll be buying again
Posted lots of photos because that’s what I looked for. I used a glove and a sock to spread it—went on easily and didn’t transfer much to my hands. Color changed but looked better, and I got it to protect my work boots from drying in cement dust.

A worksite essential for heavy-duty boots
I wear leather boots daily on construction sites and this returned them to soft, supple condition. Scuffs and ridged areas smoothed out and the waterproofing held up under tough conditions. I’ve tried many products; this one provided the protection my boots needed.

Great preservative — my boots look excellent
I love this product; it leaves my boots in excellent shape and repels water. It arrived early and has a natural, pleasant scent instead of diesel. Highly recommend for hardworking boots.

Caution: avoid on sealed or finished footwear
This works wonders on untreated, open-grain leather, but on sealed or factory-finish shoes it can sit on top and become tacky or hard to remove. It’s a preservative that penetrates unfinished leather—don’t expect it to behave the same on finished uppers.

Excellent for restoring leather car seats
Used it on old car seats with surface cracks and stiffness. Earlier conditioners weren’t rich enough, and even the leather oil took many applications. This salve achieved deep nourishment and noticeably improved the seat’s feel and look after repeated treatments.
