3/32in E7018 Low-Hydrogen Welding Rods — 5 lb Electrodes
Product description
What you get: a 5 lb bundle of 3/32in E7018 electrodes tailored for carbon steel. The rods carry an iron‑powder, low‑hydrogen coating formulated to boost deposition efficiency and produce sound, high‑strength weld metal suitable for critical fabrications.
Metallurgy and properties: these E7018 electrodes are designed to produce welds with high tensile strength and improved resistance to cracking, making them appropriate for structural steel, pressure vessels, pipework, and heavy equipment repair. Chemical composition and mechanical properties of the deposited metal are tightly controlled to meet industry requirements for strength and elongation.
Arc characteristics and appearance: the coating yields a steady, controllable arc with reduced spatter and a clean bead profile. Slag peels off readily, cutting down on cleanup, and the iron‑powder content helps form smooth, slightly concave fillets with good wetting at the toes.
Positions and welding style: these rods are intended for all‑position welding — flat, horizontal, vertical (up), and overhead — and are engineered for out‑of‑position work with good puddle control and a fast‑freezing slag suitable for pipe and structural repair.
Power and polarity: E7018 rods perform on AC and DC reverse polarity (DC+). For consistent results maintain a short arc, avoid excessive weave, and employ run‑on/run‑off tabs or a strike‑and‑return technique to reduce arc‑strike porosity.
Storage and preparation: because they are low‑hydrogen electrodes, store them in a dry oven or bake prior to use. Recommended bake is 500–700°F (260–370°C) for about one hour before welding if moisture exposure is suspected. Clean base metal of rust, oil, and moisture before welding for best results.
Pros
- Stable arc with low spatter
- All‑position capability
- Iron‑powder coating increases deposition
Cons
- Must be oven‑baked to remove moisture
- Needs a higher‑output welder for best performance
- Not intended for non‑carbon steels
VerdictSolid choice for structural carbon-steel welding where X‑ray quality and crack resistance matter. Delivers stable arc and good deposition in all positions, but requires oven storage and a suitably powerful machine for optimal results.

Performs well with the mini portable machine
I ran these rods in the maker's mini portable welder. The welder itself was smaller and less powerful than I expected, but the electrodes fed easily and welded cleanly. I haven't tried other machines, but on that branded unit they delivered good results and were worth the spend.

Not for low-output welders
Needs a higher amp welder
