Moons NEMA14 36mm (17mm body) Enhanced Stepper Motor — Direct Drive
Product description
Manufacturer background and build
Produced by Moons (est. 1994), a long-established maker of hybrid stepper motors with annual global shipments measured in the millions. This motor is the 17mm-body enhanced version of the NEMA14 family, built for direct-drive extruder use.
Mechanical and electrical details
The motor has a 17mm stack height with upgraded internal gearing for higher torque in a slim profile. It is designed to operate on 12V and 24V systems. The winding specification supports temperatures up to 130 °C, helping maintain step accuracy as the motor warms during hard use.
Thermal and reliability notes
Improved thermal control and quality internal gears reduce the chance of skipped steps or deformation of printed mounts. The motor’s wires are made from flexible conductors and come with a length suited to many Ender and Voron direct-drive conversions.
Package and compatibility
Contents: one stepper motor (single unit). Commonly used with Orbiter V1.5/V2.0, Sherpa extruders, Stealthburner/Stealth setups, Voron 3D printers and other compact extruders that accept a 17mm NEMA14 body. An ultra-light extruder upgrade is offered separately for further weight reduction.
Pros
- Compact 17mm profile with increased torque
- Good thermal tolerance and winding design
- Compatible with many direct-drive extruders
Cons
- Wiring finish and tie-downs can be inconsistent
- Some users report stiff individual wires
- Size listings have caused occasional confusion
VerdictThis 17mm-body Moons NEMA14 stepper is a solid choice for compact direct-drive extruders where space, torque and heat control matter. It runs cool in typical setups, offers robust internal gearing and precise windings that resist losing steps under thermal load. Wiring is flexible and long enough for many common direct-drive installs, though some users find the cable tie/finish and wire rigidity i

Excellent compact extruder motor
Bought this for a custom printer. It drives the filament well and the slim profile is perfect. Lightweight, powerful, and in my setup it doesn’t run hot. Printed ABS extruder parts haven’t warped after about four months. Cable length was ideal with no modifications needed. A reliable motor for long-term use.

Audible hiss when engaged
Functionally fine but emits a loud hissing noise when energized.

Perfect for Stealthburner setups
Does exactly what’s needed for a Stealthburner-style head—no issues.

Solid little motor
Tiny and dependable. Been running in a Switchwire for over a year without trouble.

Good performance, stiff wiring
Nice compact stepper that works as expected. The only gripe is the really stiff wires.

Exactly what I needed after real testing
Bought months ago to build a Voron Stealthburner head and it worked perfectly. No overheating at 800 mA and no skipped steps even under extrusion pressure. The product sheet lists the exact dimensions and specs, so check that. It’s also sold by other reputable distributors. I’ll use the same motor for a second build soon.

No issues in Sherpa Mini
Using this on a Sherpa Mini extruder with flawless operation. No overheating and it fit the printed housing I had prepared.

Not a 20mm version
This is the 17mm variant shown in the photos, not 20mm as sometimes implied. Likely fine for the listed extruders, but incompatible with setups that require a 20mm body. I returned it without testing.

Performs well and stays cool
Installed on an Ender 3 with Klipper and set to 0.75A RMS. It stays fairly cool and performs consistently. The thin flexible cable is convenient, though the separate conductors are only loosely bundled with heat shrink.

Works smoothly in Voron 2.4
The motor runs quietly and without issues as the extruder motor on my Voron 2.4.

Quiet and cool in use
Paired with a Sherpa Mini and it ran quietly and thermally stable during prints.

Reliable for long prints
Lightweight motor that handled 20-hour prints without trouble. Wiring matched my Sapphire Pro SP-3 plug and held up well in Sailfinn and Sherpa builds.
