Livewire SPDI Passive DI Box with Variable Attenuation
Product description
The Livewire SPDI is a passive direct interface intended for instrument-level signals. The unit includes a 1/4" high-impedance instrument input and a 1/4" throughput output for an on-stage amp, plus a balanced, floating low-impedance XLR output for feeding mixers and desks. Because it is passive, the SPDI requires no batteries or external power.
Controls and switching are focused and practical: a three-position attenuation pad (0, -20, -40 dB) accommodates hot pickups and active electronics, while a ground-lift switch severs the chassis ground between the 1/4" input and the XLR output to reduce hum and ground loop noise. In the grounded position the input and XLR share a common ground.
The chassis is heavy-duty all-steel for roadworthiness, and a molded rubber skid pad on the base helps keep the box in place on pedalboards or stage risers. Connectors are standard 1/4" TS for input/throughput and XLR for balanced output, so it plugs easily into common rigs.
What you get: the SPDI passive DI box with integrated attenuation pad and ground-lift switch. No batteries or phantom power are required or passed through; the floating XLR output will not carry +48V. Typical uses include sending guitar, bass, or acoustic pickups to a mixing console while keeping a local amp signal via the throughput jack.
Pros
- Selectable 0/-20/-40 dB pad for hot sources
- Floating XLR output that ignores phantom power
- Rugged all-steel chassis with rubber skid pad
Cons
- Passive design lacks active tone-shaping
- No instrument-specific impedance switching
- Limited to basic DI functionality
VerdictThe SPDI is a straightforward, no-frills passive direct box that handles instrument and acoustic signals reliably. Its selectable attenuation and ground-lift options make it flexible for high-output pickups and noisy stage setups. The floating balanced XLR output avoids passing phantom power, and the heavy steel case resists punishment on the road. If you need a durable DI for live or studio patch

Built like a tank
Very tough casing. I keep it on stage and leave it hooked up permanently.
