KAKURI Chisel & Plane Honing Guide Jig — Japanese-made Sharpening Tool
Product description
A FULL-SIZED HONING JIG FOR WOODWORKING BLADES: This sharpening guide is intended to help you re-establish and maintain a consistent bevel on Japanese plane irons (kanna) and bench chisels. It keeps the blade at a steady angle while you take strokes on your whetstone, allowing you to restore a keen edge with control.
SMOOTH ROLLER, SECURE CLAMP, ERGONOMIC HANDLES: The unit has a rotating roller so the guide can glide smoothly along a stone surface. A single clamping screw secures the blade in place and both sides are fitted with shaped ash-wood handles so you can apply even pressure without touching the blade edge while sharpening.
DESIGNED FOR JAPANESE PLANE BLADES AND CHISELS: Ideal for maintaining kanna and other hand plane blades used for smoothing and finishing wood, and suitable for a wide range of chisels. The tool assists in keeping consistent geometry on the cutting edge between full regrinds.
HEAVY-DUTY JAPANESE WORKMANSHIP: The body is manufactured from durable steel with wear resistance in mind, and the handles are ash wood. All parts are produced in Japan and assembled by craftsmen to provide a professional feel and durability.
SIZES AND COMPATIBILITY: Overall dimensions are approximately 7.08 × 2.83 × 2.83 inches. It accepts chisel blade widths from about 3 mm up to 42 mm (roughly 1/8" to 1-5/8") and plane blade widths from about 42 mm up to 70 mm (approximately 1-5/8" to 2-3/4").
Pros
- Stable roller for smooth motion on stones
- Sturdy steel body with comfortable ash handles
- Accepts a broad range of chisel and plane widths
Cons
- No built-in lateral guide for squaring narrow chisels
- Single clamp point can make repeat accuracy tricky
- Metal parts may need rust protection over time
VerdictA robust, traditional-style sharpening guide that gives reliable angle control for larger plane irons and many chisels. The roller design and solid handles let you move the blade smoothly over a stone and avoid direct contact with the edge. It’s heavy-duty steel with ash-wood grips and is made in Japan, so it feels substantial and long lived. Users report it can be awkward to square very narrow ch

Excellent for novices aiming for steady edges
Helps those new to sharpening get the edge they want. The roller width stabilizes the device so it doesn’t wobble like some other jigs.

Very secure hold and ergonomic
I was doubtful about the single clamp point, but it grips firmly. The shape fits the hand well and makes sharpening planes and chisels easy. Glad I bought it.

Best for larger plane and kanna blades
Well-made and heavy, it shines with bigger plane blades and large kanna irons. It’s less convenient for small chisels because there’s no reference line to check squareness. Handles are comfortable and give good control.

Good overall, but lacks angle-setting aid
Functional and effective, yet there’s no mechanism to restore a known blade angle if you make a mistake. If you can eyeball the angle, this is a fine choice.

Solid roller design helps with corner bevels
I tried several guides before this and the roller profile plus the handle leverage make it easy to nudge tiny bevels at the corners. Squaring a narrow chisel to the guide is fiddly — I used another guide to set it true — but with patience you can sharpen small irons successfully.

Makes sharpening straightforward
Very good quality — it simplifies the sharpening process and feels solid in hand.

Versatile tool for precise edge control
A useful workshop tool — it allows slight axial twist to tune the edge angle and the wide roller doesn’t dig into stones. Flexible and dependable in use.

Does the job, requires patience to set
Sturdy and well built, it hones as described. Adjusting the chisel to the desired angle can be tricky, but once tightened it stays put and lets you hone accurately.

Useful for kanna upkeep; watch for rust
I bought this after getting a kanna and use a square to align blade and roller. You can fine-tune by sight, lock it, and sharpen. It’s enjoyable to use, but after repeated use some screws began to show surface rust; I treated them with a rust converter.

Comfortable ergonomics but missing edge guide
I like how it feels in hand, yet it lacks any lateral edge guide to guarantee the blade sits perfectly square. That omission caught me off guard given the price.

Well built but setup can produce low spots
The construction and handles are excellent, but achieving an accurate setup is not easy for all chisels and I experienced out-of-square corners. The holding cap also detached once, which was disappointing.

Short learning curve, reliable after setup
Once you learn to judge roller level and blade flatness by eye, it’s straightforward. The roller darkened with use but stayed true. A drop of oil on the roller and clamp helped. It outperformed many simple roller sharpeners I’ve used.

Learning curve for amateurs, missing lateral support
As a hobbyist I found it hard to keep the blade square — there’s no side support so the blade can shift under pressure and you won’t get identical angles after removing and reinserting the blade. Markings relating roller distance to angle would help.
