Aqua Natural Bio-Substrate Delta Sand — 5 lb (Wet) Aquarium Sand
Product description
Seeded with live, bio-active nitrifying bacteria, this wet 5 lb bag of Delta sand is formulated to target ammonia immediately upon introduction. The product includes a patented combination of Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter strains that help oxidize ammonia into nitrite and then nitrate, speeding biological cycling in new or established aquaria.
Intended for flexible use, the sand can serve as the main substrate or be blended with like-colored Delta sand at a recommended ratio of 1:4 to adjust depth and appearance. The material is 100% natural, sustainably sourced, and undergoes triple washing and kiln drying to remove dust and contaminants while preserving a high surface area for bacterial colonization.
Graded for aquarium use, the granules are sized to cap aqua soils, anchor plant roots, and resist compaction while allowing beneficial bacteria to thrive. The sand’s natural texture and color enhance planted and community tanks alike, offering easy maintenance and a stable environment for fish and invertebrates.
Pros
- Pre-seeded with live nitrifying bacteria
- Natural, triple-washed and kiln-dried material
- Versatile use as primary or mixed substrate
Cons
- Can cause temporary cloudiness after setup
- Small 5 lb bag may be light for larger tanks
- Requires patience during initial cycling
VerdictA ready-to-use natural substrate that accelerates tank cycling and supports plant growth. The pre-loaded nitrifying bacteria and fine grain make setup quick — expect initial cloudiness but rapid clarification. Well suited for small tanks and planted setups when mixed or used on its own.

Stunning look after a few hours
I added this to my already-cycled five gallon and watched the appearance change over several hours — it cleared dramatically and now looks beautiful. If you plan to use only this sand, consider a larger bag for a five-gallon.

My live plants have thrived since I added this substrate.

Be cautious with water changes
Bought this for a new five-gallon. Expect several days of murkiness; I performed a 30% water change with fresh spring water rather than rinsing the sand out, then added plants, a quiet filter, heater, and lamp. The tank settled and my betta, Ruby, is thriving.

Works well for planted aquariums
Attractive color and grain size — perfect for capping aqua soil and anchoring plants. The bacterial cultures cycled my tank quickly and created a healthy environment for bettas and tetras. I'll use this for future builds.

Easy setup and attractive in nanos
Very simple to use — I placed it straight into my nano tanks and it started working. I appreciate not having to do an extensive rinse and love how it looks. Will keep buying this for my small setups.

Moved from gravel to sand — very glad I did
As a small-tank keeper new to sand, I used two brands and rinsed one for speed. Initial cloudiness was uncomfortable, but within about three days the water was crystal clear. Algae problems have dropped dramatically and my betta enjoys rearranging the sand.
