Marine Color JY-03 Aquarium Surface Protein Skimmer — 5W Oil Removal Filter
Product description
The JY-03 is a small 5-watt surface protein skimmer built to remove oily films and protein build-up from the top of freshwater and saltwater tanks. The unit ships with a buoyant skimming head, a sheet of filter floss/pad for trapping skimmed material, a short section of airline-style tubing for aeration or flow tuning, and suction-style mounts for attaching to glass or acrylic. The housing is molded from clear plastic so you can inspect the chamber and see when the pad needs replacing.
Physically the skimmer is compact and intended for limited-space installations: it can clip to a rim, sit near an overflow, or be positioned at the back of a display where surface agitation needs control. The internal impeller and venturi/aerator let you vary suction and introduce air to soften the outgoing flow. The unit’s floating weir responds to the waterline and maintains an adjustable skimming gap of roughly 4 cm for consistent surface contact.
Operation is straightforward: install the floss in the upper basket to collect skimmed film, attach the small tubing if you want to redirect or control air intake, and mount the body to the glass using the supplied pads or your own hardware. Routine maintenance consists of lifting the top, rinsing or replacing the filter floss, and clearing debris from the skimmer head. Because the body is transparent and the grate is buoyant, you can visually verify function and cleanliness without dismantling the whole assembly.
The unit suits nano tanks through many medium displays, though its flow can be strong for very small setups or delicate species unless you throttle it back or add inline tubing/valving. The compact footprint and simple parts make it easy to adapt or mod — many users substitute sturdier mounts or custom floss for longer-term use.
Pros
- Effectively removes surface protein and oily films
- Adjustable suction and aeration for flow control
- Clear housing and simple maintenance
Cons
- Supplied suction mounts are flimsy
- Flow can be overpowering for tiny tanks without modification
- Some units show inconsistent build/quality control
VerdictA compact, low-power surface skimmer that quickly clears film and improves gas exchange. It’s simple to install and tune, but watch the mounting hardware and strength of flow on very small tanks. Good value for hobbyists needing steady surface maintenance.

Clears film rapidly; suction cups unreliable
Surprised at how fast it removed top‑layer protein in my 75‑g tank. The only weak point is the suction mounts — they lose grip easily.

Affordable skimmer that really works
Cleared a nasty biofilm on my cichlid tank fast. Setup was easy, it runs quietly and the suction is impressive. The only downside was the original suction cups touching the bobbing head and blocking movement; I glued stronger mounts to the case and that fixed the problem.

Quiet, visible performance; occasional re-mix
Runs quietly with less vibration than other pumps I’ve used. Air venturi works and the input is adjustable. The clear casing makes it easy to tell when the pad is dirty. Occasionally the waxy skim clings to the pad or gets remixed, but the water surface stays noticeably cleaner overall.

Good when complete — check the box
My first unit worked well and I ordered another; the second arrived with differences and missing or altered parts. When you get a correct, complete item it’s an effective little skimmer, but packaging inconsistency is a recurring issue.

Performs well — watch plants and shrimp
Works perfectly on my 90cm shallow tank, though I’d have liked an adapter for local sockets. Floating plants will block the intake and shrimp can crawl into the chamber, so monitor those situations and pause the unit if needed to free livestock.

Surprising suction from a compact unit
I run this on a 75‑gallon display. I modified the lower chamber to force all intake from the surface and stuffed a foam matrix below; the result is a very strong pull from that tiny body. I perform frequent two‑bucket changes and only rinse the floss in the top basket during those swaps. Using a small piece of plastic canvas to hold the floss helps. The surface is much cleaner now, fish activity improved, and gas exchange is noticeably better.

Safe for bettas — adds gentle aeration
I bought this for a 10‑g betta/shrimp tank to fight biofilm and it cleared the surface within minutes. The aerator diffuses flow so my betta can hover on the bubbles while shrimp benefit from the extra oxygen. Not a substitute for full filtration; replace the cheap filler with proper floss for best results.

Worked briefly, then failed
Box looked generic and there were no instructions, but it initially cleared the surface of my 20‑g nano reef. The control dial seemed ineffective, and after a few weeks it stopped skimming and only pushed water like a powerhead. I missed the return window; disappointing reliability.

Gentle surface skimming with adjustable aeration
Perfect for tanks where you want surface cleaning with minimal disturbance — great for duckweed. It removes the oily layer, filters it, and returns water mixed with air. Use only the included pad or light media so the floating weir can move freely. Stronger flow than expected but didn’t disturb floating plants in my 55‑g setup.

Tiny, quiet, effective — check contents
Very effective and silent on my 20‑g, removing top film within a couple of hours. My package was slightly open and missing a suction cup which caused rattling; a small foam shim solved it. Overall pleased for the size and function.

Clears quickly; may trap fry
Looked inexpensive out of the box but performed impressively — crystal clear surface in under an hour. The suction clips are hard to insert but hold well. I skipped the aeration because it produced too many bubbles; downside: I later found a guppy fry inside the filter chamber.

Quick setup; tweak flow for small tanks
Installation took under five minutes. On my 6‑gallon setup the default flow was too strong, so I added my own tubing to slow and redirect it. If you route a hose be aware the air intake can siphon water — a small valve or plugging that line fixes it. It cleared surface film much faster once adjusted.

Discreet, effective in an overflow
Fits neatly in the rear overflow area of my 15‑g waterbox. I cut two floss pads to size and can change them without removing the unit. It’s silent and adjustable, but avoid placing it in the main display if you have sensitive corals — bubbles and flow bothered mine until I moved it to the back.
