Fluval C4 Hang-On Power Filter for 40–70 gal Aquariums
Product description
The Fluval C4 is a clip-on (hang‑on‑back) power filter engineered for aquariums approximately 40 to 70 gallons. It uses a five-stage filtration sequence: two mechanical stages, one chemical stage and two biological stages. The unit ships with Fluval C4 Poly/Foam, Activated Carbon, C‑Nodes and a Bio‑Screen pad so you can begin filtering right away.
Mechanical cleaning is handled by a dual-layer arrangement of foam and polyester media that captures both large particles and fine detritus. These foams are designed to lift out without fuss for quick rinsing, which makes routine maintenance straightforward. A patented recirculation grid improves mechanical trapping when the flow is dialed back, helping the filter remain effective at lower pump speeds.
Chemical filtration is provided by an insert basket that holds activated carbon and directs water across the media for efficient toxin removal. Biological filtration is implemented in two ways: a Bio‑Screen pad that blocks particles while offering abundant surface area for beneficial bacteria, and a dedicated trickle chamber that you load with Fluval C‑Nodes. That trickle chamber promotes fast, efficient nitrification by exposing water to highly colonizable ceramic media.
The C4’s modular layout lets you service individual stages without disturbing the whole system; retaining media in the other compartments helps preserve the bacterial populations that keep the aquarium stable. The unit clips onto the aquarium rim for easy installation and adjustable flow control helps match circulation to tank inhabitants. Included parts and the choice of bulk media compatibility make it adaptable for planted tanks, freshwater and saltwater setups alike.
Fluval’s filter lineup has a long history of multi-stage designs, and the C4 continues that approach by combining accessible maintenance with a variety of media options to create a flexible, high‑throughput HOB filter for medium to large aquaria.
Pros
- Five distinct filtration stages including trickle chamber
- Supplied media: poly/foam, activated carbon, C‑Nodes, Bio‑Screen
- Easy spot maintenance; keep stages to preserve bacteria
Cons
- Some users report impeller noise or vibration
- New ceramic media can cause temporary cloudiness if not rinsed
- Clear plastic housing may show cosmetic scratches
VerdictThe C4 delivers versatile, high-capacity filtration with dedicated mechanical, chemical and biological stages and a trickle chamber optimized for rapid nitrification when packed with C‑Nodes. It’s easy to service—mechanical media slides out for spot cleaning and the design lets you retain established bacteria by servicing one stage at a time. Typical caveats from users include a break‑in period th

Good cascade filter for the price
If you want a functional hang‑on cascade filter without spending a lot, this performs well and offers solid value for its capabilities.

Mikkie 5/5
Far better circulation than my previous HOB
Replaced a Marineland Penguin Pro and the Fluval moves noticeably more water and creates better surface agitation. After lubricating moving parts it runs very quietly and I'm much happier with the performance.

Balanced, powerful HOB (translated)
A hang‑on filter will never match a canister’s throughput, but this one feels balanced and powerful yet relatively quiet so far. I removed the carbon bag, added ceramic rings in nylon bags and layered the foam; bought two for 40 L tanks to keep good surface movement. Too strong for bettas unless flow is reduced.

Phönix09 5/5
Runs as expected, motor a bit audible
The filter performs properly; only the motor noise is a touch loud. Flow is more than adequate and there’s nothing else to complain about. Would purchase again.

Near silent if primed correctly; watch plug type
When filled with water before startup and allowed to purge air it runs almost silently. Mine arrived with an EU plug so double-check the power connector before use. Media can be changed while the unit is running, which is handy for low‑flow setups like a betta tank.

Convenient cartridge-like media layout
Appreciate that all filtration stages are organized like cartridges. I added extra ceramic rings and a 100‑micron layer in the basket out of habit, but overall it supplied a tidy, modular approach to filtration. Some pipe positions can cause turbulence.

Strong filtration, minor cosmetic and noise issues
Unit worked well but arrived with some scratches on the clear plastic housing. Matte sections held up better. Filtration capacity is impressive though it took a few weeks to settle into quieter operation.

Nice features but an annoying impeller noise
Filter offers flexible media compartments and a clever drip tray for wet/dry media, but an audible grinding/vibration from the impeller was frustrating. Tried lubrication with no success; otherwise flow control and spread are excellent.

Toolman 5/5
Good HOB option for messy cichlid setups
Mounted on a 60 gal cube alongside another canister. Chose the C4 to avoid another canister in the cabinet. It accepts bulk media and is easy to maintain; the main pad began to show clogging after about a week with heavy fish load.

Excellent performance once impeller swapped
Unit was noisy out of the box due to a vibrating impeller. After replacing the impeller the filter became quiet and maintains a sparkling tank. Support sent the part quickly and service was helpful.

Plenty of flow — cleared after break‑in
I'm running the C4 on a 20 gallon and it pushes a lot of water. To reduce turbulence I added a prefilter and a foam sponge at the outlet. The tank was cloudy at first — likely from the C‑Nodes — but after rinsing and a couple of days of run time the water cleared and has been crystal since.

ECW 5/5
Well designed and easy to service
Feels like an upgraded design compared with older HOB models: sleeker, thought through for upkeep. Each filtration compartment removes independently, so cleaning the mechanical sponge is quick and can be done without powering the whole filter down.

Fus 5/5
Very adaptable for planted tanks with one caveat
Used on a heavily planted 10.5 gal tank. I skipped the activated carbon since live plants benefit from CO2, rinsed the unit thoroughly, and replaced the carbon pouch with extra biological substrate. Installation and swaps were straightforward.
