Tow-Behind Broadcast Spreader — 85 lb Capacity, Model 45-0530
Product description
Model 45-0530 (now referenced as 45-0530-131 in current listings) is a tow-behind broadcast spreader designed to be pulled behind tractors and ride-on mowers. The hopper capacity is rated at 85 pounds and is sized to service about 1/4 acre (approximately 14,000 sq. ft.) per fill. The spreader can broadcast material across a swath up to 10 feet wide, helping reduce passes.
Key components include a molded hopper, an outlet chute feeding a spinner disk, a wheel-driven gearbox that links wheel rotation to the distribution fan, and a remote on/off control positioned so it can be operated from the tractor seat. The control assembly allows you to stop and start flow without dismounting.
The spreader rides on 10" pneumatic tires for smoother towing and traction across varied terrain. Construction uses a combination of materials: the hopper and certain covers are molded plastic, while critical drive elements and control linkages are metal. Some small distribution parts, including the spinner, are plastic.
A degree of assembly is required out of the box; parts are shipped for owner installation. A video instruction guide is available to walk through setup steps and component installation.
Pros
- Large 85 lb hopper reduces refill frequency
- Wheel-driven distribution matches forward speed
- 10" pneumatic tires for smoother towing
Cons
- Hopper and some small parts are molded plastic
- Chute control can be finicky to adjust
- Assembly can be time-consuming for some users
VerdictThis 45-0530 tow-behind spreader is a straightforward option for homeowners and small-acreage users who need a simple, towable broadcast solution. It holds up to 85 lbs and can cover roughly a quarter acre per fill, with a spread pattern as wide as 10 feet. It attaches to a tractor or riding mower, uses a wheel-driven gearbox to pace distribution with forward speed, and includes an on/off actuator

Solid purchase — easy to assemble
Item arrived in good condition. Assembling it myself saved money and I can't wait to try it out.

Good value with reliable support
Exactly what I expected: a roomy hopper and solid stability, though it can tip if driven recklessly. It's simple to assemble and use, and warranty support and customer service have been very good in my experience.

Open/close lever feels cheap
Good concept but the open/close mechanism is weak; you can open it but can't fully close or finely adjust the flow. It only works well if you keep it moving.

Functional after a simple modification
Instructions needed some interpretation and the control lever mount interfered with cable travel, so I left out a bolt and used a zip tie. Once attached to my mower it spread 20 kg of feed evenly. I would buy again.

Assembly frustrating; chute actuator weak
Assembly was tough for me; parts aren't labeled and the instructions weren't very clear, so it took about four hours. There's an unclear clevis pin location and the chute control felt flimsy, sometimes sliding shut under load. You can't easily see the opening when the hopper is full, which makes adjustment awkward.

Damaged arrival then control cable failed
My first unit arrived with a bent axle and cracked hopper and was returned. The replacement built up fine but the outlet cable detached during use, causing the door to close and stop dispensing. Resetting it dumped seed; the control design feels fragile.

Worked initially but control shattered after storage
After initial time-consuming assembly it performed acceptably, though the metering wasn't precise. After three uses and careful cleaning I stored it; months later the plastic control module broke apart when touched, leaving it unusable and wasting product.

Metal drive and dependable operation
My unit's drive and control lever are metal — only the hopper, wheels and distribution fan are plastic. Protective covers shield the metal parts from weather. The wheel-driven mechanism varies spinner speed with ground speed and the lever adjusts flow reliably.

Fast setup and even spreading
Putting it together took about 20 minutes and all parts were present. It spreads evenly when pulled at a steady speed across my acreage. The outlet adjuster took a bit to get right but held once dialed in.

Does the job but flow control is coarse
It works, but the bottom chute and door lack finesse — the product's weight can keep the door from opening gradually so flow tends to be all-or-nothing. It continues to pour when you stop, leaving piles unless you actively manage the control while towing.

Clear instructions and strong coverage
Assembly was straightforward with readable instructions. It spread four 20 kg bags evenly over an acre using my ride-on mower, and a single 20 kg bag fit the hopper well.
