Proven Industries Model 2178 Trailer Coupler Lock — 2-Inch (Blue-Square)
Product description
RUGGED COUPLER LOCK: This model is designed to provide a high level of protection for trailers and campers by covering and locking down compatible 2-inch trailer couplers. It secures the latch and helps keep the trailer immobilized when attached.
HARDENED COMPONENTS: Internal locking elements are made from hardened steel for resistance to cutting and forced entry. The exterior shroud is heavy and reinforced to resist brute tools such as hammers, pry bars and common power tools.
UNIQUE KEY SYSTEM: The lock uses a proprietary key profile and internal mechanism intended to make picking and straightforward duplication difficult. The key and internal lockwork are designed to be non-standard to reduce the chance of unauthorized copies.
COMPATIBILITY AND VARIANTS: The 2178 is built for certain 2-inch coupler shapes; it will not mount to every 2" hitch. Proven offers alternate variants (for example styles for flat or unique couplers) — check the matching model for your trailer tongue before ordering.
FEATURES AND USE: The unit covers the coupler head, secures the latch to prevent lifting, and provides space to stow safety chains within the housing. Some designs include drainage/venting to prevent water buildup in the cavity.
MADE IN USA: The lock is researched, designed and manufactured in the United States, with attention to fit, finish and durability through the production process.
Pros
- Hardened-steel internals for strong resistance
- Unique key profile reduces picking and easy duplication
- Encloses latch and safety chains for a tidy, secure fit
Cons
- Fits only particular 2-inch coupler shapes
- Heavy unit can be bulky to carry around
- Higher cost than lightweight alternatives
VerdictA rugged, well-built coupler lock with hardened-steel components and a patented-style keying system that deters tampering. Highly secure for compatible 2-inch couplers, but confirm your hitch type before buying to ensure proper fit.

Needed a different variant for my flat coupler
Customer support helped me swap the 2178 for the 2178U to work with my Magic Tilt flat coupler. The exchange was straightforward and the replacement fits my trailer well so far.

Extremely solid on a dual-axle trailer
Installed on a dual-axle trailer for a pontoon. It slid on easily, felt rock-steady once locked, and secured both the hitch and chain attachments. Very reassuring.

Finally stopped worrying about theft
I live where trailer theft is common and had no secure storage. This lock removed the anxiety — after months in use I feel the trailer is safe when parked in public. Worth the expenditure for my peace of mind.

Only fits select coupling styles — inspect your tongue
If your coupler uses a particular collar or yoke style, this may not line up even if you have a 2" ball. The concept and weight are impressive, but a misaligned insert or set screw can prevent the pin from seating. Check your coupling type carefully before buying.

Massive, well-engineered protection
This unit is substantial and seats on my coupler without leaving vulnerable edges. It clamps the latch down so it cannot be lifted while installed. The chain keeper accepts oversized hooks with room to spare and the housing has bottom vents to drain water. The keyway appears designed to resist copying. A bit pricey but seems like a solid investment to protect an expensive trailer.

Holds chains and secures the tongue well
Performs reliably, holds the safety chains inside the head and provides a secure lock on the tongue.

Superb build but check fit carefully
Welding, weight and finish were excellent on the unit I received. It’s a robust system and a real step up from cheaper options. My particular 2" hitch had an external yoke and the standard 2178 did not fit; support told me a different model exists for that application. Initial response was slow but chat support became helpful once contact was made.

Installation support and a robust unit
After ordering, the company requested tongue photos to confirm the correct style, then shipped the right model a few days later. Easy to fit and take apart; heavy-duty build and a nonstandard key that should be hard to duplicate.

Good quality — stow chains inside
Solid locking hardware. I tuck my safety chains inside the housing and the whole assembly feels secure. I would recommend it.
