Limestone Calcium Supplement for Laying Chickens & Ducks — 8 lb Pouch
Product description
What you get: a resealable 8 lb pouch of crushed limestone formulated for laying chickens and ducks. The product is packaged for convenient, free-choice feeding so each bird can take calcium as needed.
Material and form: crushed limestone granules—coarse, pea- to grit-sized fragments—designed to be easy for adult birds to pick at. This texture makes it suitable both as a direct supplement and as an occasional soil amendment for certain plant mixes.
How to use: offer in a separate dish or feeder apart from the regular layer ration so birds can self-regulate intake. Calcium is already present in layer feeds, but supplemental free-choice limestone helps birds that need extra support during peak laying or seasonal stress.
Why it matters: insufficient calcium causes hens to draw on skeletal stores, compromising both shell quality and bird health. Providing a dedicated calcium source helps maintain firm eggshells and overall flock well-being.
Alternative to oyster shell: while oyster shell is a common choice, crushed limestone is a dependable substitute that is often easier to obtain. It delivers comparable elemental calcium in a readily consumed form.
Origin: sourced and processed in the USA to meet typical backyard poultry needs. Store in a cool, dry place and protect from moisture and freezing to keep the granules usable.
Pros
- Free-choice supplement lets birds self-regulate
- Good granule size for pecking adults
- USA-sourced alternative to oyster shell
Cons
- Susceptible to moisture and freezing
- Not all birds may prefer it
- Requires separate feeder or dish
VerdictA straightforward, free-choice limestone supplement for backyard layers and waterfowl. It supplies the extra calcium many breeds need without altering their regular feed. Users report improved shell quality and good palatability for some birds. Keep it dry, since moisture and freezing can make it unusable in cold, wet conditions.

Also useful for plants
Bag look changed, but the particle size is still fine for amending cactus and potting mixes.

Ducks devour it
My ducks treat it like a treat. The hens are less excited.

Helped laying until it froze
Egg numbers climbed after I added this and some hens started laying again. It stopped being usable once it absorbed moisture and froze in the run.

Just what I needed — my hens are enjoying it.

Long-lasting option
Hens prefer this over oyster shell and the pouch seems to last a long time. A little goes a long way.

Works well for my flock
New to chickens — I had oyster shell at first, but switched to this after a tip. I leave it in a dish and they’re eating through it faster.

Noticeable shell improvement
They liked it and shell breakage decreased within about a week, even though they free-range and eat quality layer feed.
