Baking
22 x 16 x 1/4 in Pizza Baking Steel for Oven & Grill — Fast Heating
Product description
What’s included and dimensions
The product is a single baking steel measuring approximately 22 inches by 16 inches with a 1/4-inch thickness. It arrives as a solid rectangular plate intended for use on oven racks, grills, or under broilers. A carrying hole/handle is provided so the steel can be hung for storage or moved more easily.
Materials and finish
Constructed from high-carbon steel, the plate is made to withstand high temperatures and frequent use. Edges and surfaces are polished to a rounded finish to reduce sharpness and minimize risk of scratching hands or racks. The surface may arrive with some form of protective layer or coating that some buyers choose to strip, scrape, or season before cooking.
Thermal performance
At a quarter-inch thickness the steel offers rapid, even heat transfer to the food placed on it, promoting well-browned, crisp crusts while maintaining tender interiors. It’s suitable for pizza, flatbreads, sourdough and other artisan loaves; it also works directly on grills for the same effect.
Care and maintenance
Cleaning is straightforward once the surface is prepared: the flat finish allows residues to be wiped away with water and a scraper when cool. Many users elect to season the plate with a high-smoke-point oil to build a protective patina; because the product may have a factory-applied coating, there are no unified instructions included and some purchasers perform initial heating and scrubbing to prepare the surface.
How to use
Preheat the steel thoroughly in a hot oven or over coals before sliding dough onto it for best results. It will hold and distribute heat well for fast bakes — pizzas often finish in minutes at high temperatures — and works equally for bread and reheating frozen items. Because of its weight and size, handle with care when placing or removing it from an oven.
Pros
- Fast, even heat transfer for crisp crusts
- Durable carbon steel construction
- Versatile for oven, grill and broiler use
Cons
- Very heavy and bulky to handle
- Surface coating may be irregular or unclear
- No clear care or seasoning instructions included
VerdictThis 22" x 16" x 1/4" carbon steel baking steel excels at transferring heat quickly to create crisp, oven-quality crusts for pizza, bread and flatbreads. It’s robust and durable, with smoothed edges and a handle for storage. Downsides noted by users include significant weight and occasional issues with the surface coating and lack of care instructions, which can make initial seasoning and maintena

Great heat distribution but coating problems
Distributes heat evenly and makes a superb crust; ideal size for large pizzas. That said, the plating shows nicks and missing coating in areas, plus there’s no information on what the finish is made of. That lack of transparency makes me uneasy about long-term food contact without more prep.

Reliable performance when preheated
Does the job well. When fully preheated it cooks pizzas quickly and crisps the crust without sticking.

Great results for pizza and frozen pies
Makes excellent pizza with a simple dough — consistent results every time. Cooks frozen pizzas well too, and the finish looked nicer than another model I tried. I bake at 550°F for about 6–8 minutes.

No guidance on the factory coating
I haven’t cooked on it yet, but it’s heavy and likely effective. The issue is a mysterious coating and zero instructions. I’ve been heating, scraping and experimenting to season it — not for someone wanting a plug-and-play tool.

Too large and tricky to season
Very heavy and wide; I had to rearrange my oven racks to fit it. It sometimes prevents a loaf pan from browning unless used directly. I tried seasoning with flax oil and it smoked badly, then cleaned and reseasoned with avocado oil. Wish I’d chosen a smaller size, but I’ll adapt and keep using it.

Surface layer peeled during first use
Don’t bother — the top layer scraped off the first time I slid a peel under a pizza. The coating also separated on the underside where it contacted the oven rack.

Appears painted rather than bare steel
Solid slab but the description felt misleading. I thought a protective film was present, but it looks painted. Not just an oil finish — I’m skeptical it’s true carbon steel and will be returning it.

Excellent cooking, awkward to handle
Heats evenly and yields great crusts on pizza and bread. Feels well-built and long-lasting. The downside is its bulk and weight, which make it cumbersome to move in a standard home oven.
