Essential Ingredients for Perfect Cheese Twists
Crafting these irresistible puff pastry cheese twists requires just a handful of straightforward ingredients. The magic truly happens when these simple components come together to create a symphony of flavor and texture:
- Puff Pastry: The foundation of our twists! The quality and type of puff pastry can significantly influence the final result. We highly recommend Wewalka puff pastry, often found in the refrigerated section near canned biscuits. This particular brand consistently delivers exceptional puff and the crispiest, flakiest layers. For an alternative, if Wewalka isn’t available, you could use canned Pillsbury crescent rolls, though the texture won’t be as light and flaky. Frozen Pepperidge Farms puff pastry is another excellent option; just ensure it’s properly thawed in the refrigerator for a few hours or on the counter for 15-20 minutes until it’s pliable and easy to handle without tearing.
- Grated Cheeses: A blend of two cheeses provides depth and savory richness. We opt for a combination of both sharp Parmesan cheese and robust Romano cheese for a classic, irresistible flavor profile.
- Seasonings: To elevate the cheesy goodness, we incorporate a flavorful mix of garlic powder, fragrant Italian seasoning, a touch of Kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper. These spices add an aromatic layer that complements the cheese beautifully.
- Egg: Essential for creating an egg wash, which gives the twists a beautiful golden-brown sheen and helps the cheese adhere perfectly to the pastry.
- Water: Used to thin out the egg for an ideal egg wash consistency.
Step-by-Step Guide to Making Flaky Cheese Twists
Follow these easy steps to create your own batch of delicious, golden cheese twists:
- Preheat Your Oven: Begin by preheating your oven. The specific temperature often depends on the puff pastry brand you’re using, but typically ranges around 425°F (220°C). Always refer to the package instructions for the most accurate temperature.
- Prepare the Puff Pastry: Carefully unroll the thawed puff pastry dough onto a lightly floured clean surface. This prevents sticking and makes it easier to work with.
- Combine Cheese and Spices: In a small bowl, thoroughly mix the grated Parmesan and Romano cheeses with the garlic powder, Italian seasoning, Kosher salt, and black pepper. Ensure all ingredients are well combined for an even distribution of flavor.
- Roll Out the Dough: Lightly dust your rolling pin with flour to prevent sticking. Gently roll the puff pastry dough out into a rectangular shape, aiming for dimensions of approximately 14 inches wide by 12 inches tall. This provides a good surface area for the cheese.
- Create the Egg Wash: In another small bowl, whisk together the egg and water until thoroughly combined. This mixture will serve as your egg wash.
- Apply Egg Wash and Cheese: Brush the egg wash evenly over the entire surface of the puff pastry dough. Then, generously sprinkle the prepared cheese and spice mixture over the egg-washed dough. Use your rolling pin to gently press the cheese mixture into the dough. This crucial step helps the cheese adhere to the pastry, preventing it from falling off during the twisting and baking process.

- Cut the Pastry into Strips: For the best and cleanest cuts, use a pizza cutter. A sharp knife will also work effectively. Cut the dough into 12 thin vertical strips. Then, cut the dough horizontally through the middle, creating 24 uniform pieces.

- Twist the Dough: Take one strip of dough and gently lift it, twisting it from top to bottom. As you twist, ensure the cheese-coated side faces outwards to create that beautiful spiraled effect. Continue twisting until the entire strip is curled. Once twisted, place each pastry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving a small space between each twist to allow for expansion during baking.
- Bake to Golden Perfection: Place the baking trays into your preheated oven. Bake for approximately 18 minutes, or until the cheese twists turn a beautiful golden brown and are visibly crisp and flaky. Once baked, remove them from the oven and allow them to cool completely on the baking sheet or a wire rack before serving. This cooling period is important for achieving optimal crispness. Serve with your favorite pasta dishes, a variety of dipping sauces, fresh salads, or comforting soups.

Get Creative: Explore Different Cheese and Flavor Combinations
While our classic Parmesan and Romano blend is undeniably delicious, these cheese twists are incredibly adaptable! Don’t hesitate to experiment with different types of cheese to discover your own perfect flavor profile. Some fantastic choices include:
- Extra Sharp Cheddar: For a bolder, tangier flavor and beautiful orange hue.
- Gruyere: Offers a nutty, earthy richness that pairs wonderfully with puff pastry.
- Asiago: A semi-hard cheese with a pungent, savory taste that adds complexity.
- Manchego: A sheep’s milk cheese with a distinct, slightly salty flavor.
- Hard Goat Cheese: For a tangy, earthy, and sophisticated twist.
Beyond the cheese, consider playing with the seasonings to match your chosen cheese or desired flavor. Dried herbs like thyme, rosemary, or oregano can add an aromatic depth. For a touch of warmth and color, try paprika or smoked paprika. If you enjoy a little kick, a pinch of chili powder or cayenne pepper can provide a delightful surprise. Imagine smoky cheddar with a hint of chipotle, or a Mediterranean blend with feta and dried mint – the possibilities are endless!
Perfect Pairings: What to Serve with Your Cheese Twists
These flaky, cheesy breadsticks are incredibly versatile and can enhance almost any meal or occasion. Think of them as a gourmet upgrade to traditional breadsticks, ideal for:
- Hearty Italian Dinners: They are exceptional for soaking up rich sauces. One of our absolute favorite pairings is with our Instant Pot Spaghetti, offering a delightful textural contrast and ensuring no drop of delicious sauce goes to waste. They also complement dishes like our Spinach and Ricotta Stuffed Shells, a creamy Chicken Alfredo Lasagna Roll-up, or our robust Beef Braciole. The twists add a cheesy, crisp element that makes these meals truly memorable.
- Soups and Salads: Serve them alongside a warm bowl of tomato soup, a creamy broccoli cheddar soup, or a crisp Caesar salad for an added crunch and burst of flavor.
- Appetizers and Snacks: When serving as an appetizer, we highly recommend offering a variety of dipping sauces. Classic marinara sauce, a fragrant flavored olive oil (perhaps infused with garlic and herbs), or a creamy Ranch dressing are all excellent choices that cater to different palates.
- Brunch: While often savory, these can even be a unique addition to a brunch spread, especially if you experiment with sweeter-leaning cheeses or a touch of honey in the egg wash.
Plan Ahead: How to Make and Store Your Cheese Twists
One of the many advantages of these cheese twists is how easily you can prepare them in advance. This makes them perfect for busy weeknights or for entertaining guests without last-minute stress.
- Storing Baked Twists (Room Temperature): To make them ahead, simply follow all the baking instructions, then let them cool completely. Once cool, transfer the twists to an airtight container. They will remain fresh and crisp on your countertop at room temperature for 3 to 5 days.
- Why Avoid the Refrigerator: We don’t recommend storing baked cheese twists in the refrigerator. The cool, dry air can quickly cause them to dry out, making them less flaky and less enjoyable.
- Freezing for Longer Storage: If you need to store them for a longer period, freezing is an excellent option. Once the baked twists are completely cooled, individually wrap each twist in plastic wrap. Then, place the wrapped twists in an airtight freezer-safe container or a heavy-duty resealable freezer bag. Properly stored, they will maintain their freshness in the freezer for up to 2 months.
- Reheating Frozen Twists: When you’re ready to enjoy your frozen cheese twists, first allow them to thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Once thawed, remove the plastic wrap and arrange them on a baking sheet. Reheat them in a 350°F (175°C) oven for about 5 minutes, or until they are warmed through and have regained their delightful crispness.
