Gather Your Ingredients: What You’ll Need to Create This Halloween Delight

One of the best aspects of this Halloween Dessert Pizza is its simplicity, largely thanks to a few key ingredients and tools that make the process a breeze. You don’t need to be a gourmet chef to whip up this impressive treat; just a love for chocolate, candy, and a good time! Here’s a detailed look at what you’ll need to get started:

  • 13-inch Pizza Pan: A good quality pizza pan is essential for achieving that perfect round “pizza” shape and a beautifully baked brownie crust. We recommend a non-stick pan to ensure easy removal. Even with a non-stick surface, a light coating of cooking spray or vegetable oil, and a circle of parchment paper on the bottom, will guarantee your brownie slides out effortlessly. We found this convenient set of two from Wilton to be ideal for this recipe and many other baking adventures.
  • Brownie Mix + Ingredients on Package: This recipe embraces convenience without sacrificing flavor. A standard box of brownie mix is the secret to a quick and consistently delicious crust. Make sure to pick a box that specifies instructions for a 13×9 inch pan, as this size usually yields the right amount of batter for a 13-inch pizza pan without overflowing. Avoid “family size” mixes, as they might produce too much batter. We used Betty Crocker Milk Chocolate Brownie Mix (18.4 oz box), but feel free to use your favorite brand. For those who prefer from-scratch baking, your cherished homemade brownie recipe can also work beautifully; just ensure the batter volume is appropriate for the pan and doesn’t fill it too close to the rim.
  • Nutella: Oh, Nutella! This creamy, irresistible chocolate hazelnut spread is the heart of our dessert pizza’s “sauce.” Its rich, smooth texture and distinctive flavor complement the brownie crust perfectly, adding an extra layer of indulgence. When slightly warmed, it spreads like a dream, creating a luxurious base for all your candy toppings.
  • Halloween Candy: This is where the real fun begins and your creativity can shine! The beauty of this dessert pizza is its versatility. You can use any combination of your favorite Halloween candies, whether they’re fresh from the store or delightful leftovers from trick-or-treating. Chopping larger candies into smaller, bite-sized pieces ensures an even distribution of flavor and makes the pizza easier to eat. Here are a few suggestions to inspire your spooky creation:
    • Halloween M&Ms: Their festive colors add instant visual appeal.
    • Candy Corn: A classic Halloween staple, offering a unique texture and flavor.
    • Butterfinger: For a delightful crunch and peanut buttery goodness.
    • Reese’s Cups: Chopped mini Reese’s are always a crowd-pleaser with their chocolate and peanut butter combo.
    • Halloween Sprinkles: A quick way to add extra color and sparkle.
    • Candy Eyes: Perfect for giving your dessert pizza a playful, spooky character!

Don’t be afraid to mix and match! Think about varying textures – crunchy, chewy, soft – and different flavor profiles to create your ultimate Halloween masterpiece.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Bake Your Halloween Dessert Pizza

Creating this festive Halloween treat is surprisingly simple, making it a perfect project for bakers of all skill levels. Follow these straightforward steps to assemble your spooky sweet pizza:

  1. Prepare Your Pizza Pan: Start by preparing your 13-inch pizza pan. Lightly spray it with non-stick cooking spray, ensuring full coverage, and then line the bottom with a circle of parchment paper. This crucial step will prevent the brownie crust from sticking and make it incredibly easy to remove and transfer your finished dessert pizza.
  2. Mix the Brownie Batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the brownie mix with the wet ingredients specified on the back of the box (typically oil, water, and eggs). Stir until just combined, being careful not to overmix. A few lumps are perfectly fine and often lead to a chewier brownie!
  3. Spread the Batter: Pour the prepared brownie batter evenly into the lined pizza pan. Use the back of a spoon or an offset spatula to gently spread the batter out to the edges, ensuring a level and uniform crust. This will ensure even baking.
  4. Bake the Brownie Crust: Place the pan in your preheated oven and bake according to the instructions provided on your brownie mix box for a 13×9 inch pan. Baking times can vary slightly, so keep an eye on it. The brownie should be set, and a toothpick inserted into the center should come out with moist crumbs, not wet batter.
  5. Cool Completely: Once baked, carefully remove the brownie crust from the oven. It’s vital to let it cool completely on a wire rack before proceeding to the next step. Attempting to spread the Nutella on a warm brownie will cause it to melt and absorb, resulting in a less defined “sauce” layer. Patience here will be rewarded!
  6. Prepare and Apply the Nutella “Sauce”: When your brownie crust is fully cooled, it’s time for the delicious Nutella topping. Scoop about 1 cup of Nutella into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave it for 15-30 seconds, or until it becomes slightly warm and runny, making it much easier to spread. Be cautious not to overheat it. Once softened, use a spoon or spatula to spread the Nutella evenly over the brownie layer, leaving about a 1-inch border around the outside edge, just like a traditional pizza crust.
  7. Decorate with Halloween Candy: Now for the most exciting part! Generously sprinkle your chosen assortment of Halloween candies over the Nutella layer. Get creative with your arrangement, mixing colors and textures for a visually stunning and delicious result. For a truly spooky touch, consider adding candy eyes!
  8. Cut and Serve: Your Halloween Dessert Pizza is now ready to be enjoyed! Use a sharp knife or a pizza cutter to slice it into wedges or squares, depending on your preference. If you’re not serving it immediately, you can cover it loosely and refrigerate it until party time. This dessert tastes great chilled or at room temperature.

Tips for the Perfect Halloween Dessert Pizza

  • Don’t Overbake the Brownie: A slightly underbaked brownie will be fudgier and chewier, which is ideal for a dessert pizza crust. Overbaking can lead to a dry, crumbly base.
  • Chill for Cleaner Slices: While delicious at room temperature, chilling the dessert pizza for at least 30 minutes before cutting will result in cleaner, more defined slices, especially if your Nutella layer is very thick.
  • Customize Your Crust: While brownie mix is super convenient, you can also experiment with other bases! A giant chocolate chip cookie baked in the pizza pan makes an equally delicious “pizza” base.
  • Vary Your “Sauce”: Not a Nutella fan? Try a cream cheese frosting tinted orange or green for a spooky effect, or a melted white chocolate ganache for a different flavor profile.
  • Creative Candy Placement: Instead of just sprinkling, try arranging candy in a pattern! Create a spiderweb with piped white icing and then place plastic spiders, or arrange candy eyes to form a monster face.
  • Storage: Store any leftover dessert pizza in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Bring it to room temperature before serving for the best texture.
