Why a Charcuterie Board is Essential for Your Holiday Gatherings
There’s an undeniable magic to grazing boards, especially during the festive season. Perhaps it’s the sheer variety of flavors and textures, the vibrant colors that pop against a wooden backdrop, or simply the way everyone naturally congregates around them, sharing food and laughter. A few years ago, I began crafting themed charcuterie boards for every major celebration, and when Christmas arrived, I knew I wanted to create something truly special and exceptionally fun. That’s when the idea of the brie snowman was born.
This whimsical creation instantly became a tradition in our home, captivating guests and becoming an instant photo opportunity. The best part? This concept is incredibly versatile. You can easily adapt it to your preferences, using whatever delicious ingredients you have on hand or can find at your local market. It’s about creating an experience that’s both elegant and approachable, allowing you to spend less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying the company of your loved ones during this precious time of year. A charcuterie board offers a relaxed dining experience, allowing guests to graze at their leisure, making it perfect for varying appetites and schedules.

Crafting the Centerpiece: Your Adorable Brie Snowman
The snowman brie is undoubtedly the star of this Christmas charcuterie board, providing a focal point that is both charming and delicious. Creating this edible artwork is surprisingly simple and adds a personalized touch that will make your board truly unique. Follow these easy steps to bring your cheesy snowman to life:
Step-by-Step Guide to Assembling Your Snowman Brie
- Select Your Board: Begin with a large serving board or platter. Materials like wood, marble, or slate provide an elegant backdrop. Ensure it offers ample surface area to comfortably arrange all your festive ingredients.
- Position the Brie Snowman Head: Gently place your round brie wheel near the top-center of your chosen board. This will serve as the snowman’s head.
- Create the Top Hat: To form the brim of the hat, arrange a row of whole black olives directly on top of the brie wheel. Then, above the brim, create a rectangular shape using more whole black olives to complete the main body of the hat.
- Add Facial Features: Use two thin slices of black olive for the snowman’s eyes. For the nose, slice a baby carrot in half lengthwise and place one half flat-side down, creating a charming orange accent.
- Fashion the Scarf: Using slices of red bell pepper, create a festive scarf. Arrange a few slices around the base of the brie wheel, as if tying it loosely around the snowman’s neck. Then, add a few more vertical slices hanging down to form the flowing ends of the scarf. This touch of red adds a wonderful pop of holiday color.
- Whimsical Cheese Cutouts: Before adding other elements, take small snowflake or star-shaped cookie cutters and cut out festive shapes from a different block of cheese (like white cheddar or provolone). Scatter these charming cheese cutouts around the board to enhance the holiday theme.
- Arrange Meats and Cheeses: Artfully fold or roll your chosen meat slices and fan them out in distinct groups around the board. Similarly, cube or slice your other cheese varieties and arrange them, alternating colors and textures for maximum visual appeal.
- Fill with Fruits, Nuts, and Extras: Start filling in the empty spaces around your main components. Tuck in bunches of grapes, assorted nuts, and dried fruits like apricots or cranberries around the edges and between the larger elements. This adds both color and texture.
- Final Touches with Crackers and Garnish: Complete your masterpiece by arranging stacks or fanned arrays of crackers strategically around the board. For a final wintery, rustic touch, nestle a few sprigs of fresh rosemary amongst the ingredients—it smells wonderful and looks like tiny pine branches.

Curating Your Christmas Charcuterie: Ingredients & Inspirations
The beauty of a charcuterie board lies in its versatility. While the brie snowman provides a charming anchor, the surrounding ingredients allow for endless creativity. Selecting a diverse range of flavors, textures, and colors is key to building a truly irresistible spread. Think about balancing savory with sweet, creamy with crunchy, and mild with bold to satisfy every guest.
Premium Cheese Selections for Every Palate
Cheese is the heart of any charcuterie board. Offer a variety to cater to different tastes, from those who prefer subtle flavors to the more adventurous connoisseurs.
Mild & Kid-Friendly Cheeses
These gentle cheeses are perfect for picky eaters and younger guests, offering familiar and comforting flavors:
- Colby Jack: Known for its mild flavor, beautiful marbled appearance, and soft texture, making it visually appealing and easy to eat.
- Cheddar (Mild or Medium): A universally loved classic that’s flavorful without being overpowering. Its firm texture holds up well to slicing and cubing.
- Mozzarella: Soft, creamy, and delicate. Offer fresh mozzarella slices or string cheese sticks for an easy, kid-friendly option.
- Provolone: A semi-soft cheese with a smooth texture and a mild, slightly nutty flavor that pairs well with many meats.
- Havarti: Buttery, smooth, and incredibly easy to slice, this Danish-inspired cheese practically melts in your mouth.
Medium to Sharp Cheeses
These selections introduce a bit more complexity and flavor, appealing to guests who appreciate a bolder profile without being too intense:
- Sharp Cheddar: Offers a wonderful tangy punch that provides a fantastic contrast to milder meats and sweet fruits.
- Gouda (Young or Smoked): Young gouda is creamy with a slightly sweet, mild flavor, while smoked gouda adds a delightful smoky depth.
- Fontina: A semi-soft cheese with a nutty, earthy flavor and a smooth texture that slices beautifully and complements a wide range of meats.
- Monterey Jack: Mild and creamy with a subtle tang, it’s a versatile choice that pairs wonderfully with crackers and various cold cuts.
- Swiss: Instantly recognizable by its distinctive holes and mild, nutty, and slightly sweet flavor, making it a classic deli favorite.
Bold & Textured Cheeses for the Adventurous
For adults or guests who enjoy more intense flavors and unique textures, these options add sophistication and excitement. Use them sparingly to provide variety without overwhelming the board:
- Brie: This creamy, rich, and decadent cheese is a charcuterie staple, pairing exquisitely with fruit and crackers. Elevate it further by serving our Baked Brie with Honey and Nuts.
- Blue Cheese Crumbles or Wedges: Offers a distinctively bold, pungent, and salty flavor that is fantastic drizzled with honey or paired with dried fruits.
- Goat Cheese (Chèvre): Tangy, soft, and spreadable. It can be rolled in fresh herbs or dried cranberries for added color and flavor. Our Cranberry Goat Cheese Log is a particularly festive addition.
- Pepper Jack: For those who love a bit of heat, this cheese offers a mild spice from jalapeño peppers, providing an exciting kick.
Expert Tips for Your Holiday Charcuterie Board
- Contrast is Key: Aim for a mix of textures and flavors. Combine soft and hard cheeses, sweet and salty items, and crunchy and creamy elements to create an engaging sensory experience.
- Color Matters: Embrace the holiday palette! Reds, greens, whites, and golds instantly evoke a festive mood. Use cranberries, green grapes, white cheeses, and golden crackers intentionally.
- Plan Ahead: Save time on the day of your event by pre-cutting cheeses, washing fruits, and prepping vegetables the night before. Assemble the board about an hour or so before serving.
- Let Cheese Breathe: For optimal flavor and texture, remove cheeses from the refrigerator about 30 minutes to an hour before serving to allow them to come to room temperature.

Artisan Meat Pairings to Complement Your Cheeses
A well-rounded charcuterie board includes a thoughtful selection of cured meats. Choose a variety that offers different flavors and textures, from mild to savory, to pair beautifully with your cheese selections.
Classic & Mild Meats
These options are generally crowd-pleasers, perfect for kids and guests who prefer simple, familiar flavors:
- Honey Ham: Slightly sweet and incredibly palatable, honey ham can be sliced thin, cubed, or even rolled for an attractive presentation.
- Chicken Breast Slices: A lean and mild option that provides a neutral base, pairing harmoniously with almost any cheese or accompaniment.
- Pepperoni: A traditional favorite with a slightly spicy, robust flavor. Its round shape makes it easy to layer or fold.
- Smoked Turkey Breast: Offers a gentle smoky flavor that adds depth without being overly bold, a great alternative to ham.
Savory & Salty Meats
These meats introduce more robust flavors and interesting textures, adding complexity and a gourmet touch to your board:
- Salami (Mild or Genoa): A staple for its rich, salty flavor. Its firm texture allows for beautiful layering, folding into rosettes, or simple stacking.
- Summer Sausage: Known for its firm texture and tangy, spiced flavor. Slice into thick rounds for easy handling and a hearty bite.
- Mortadella: A light, smooth, and slightly creamy Italian sausage with a subtle pork flavor and often pistachios or peppercorns.
- Capicola (Mild): Thin-sliced and delicately spiced, capicola offers a slightly more adventurous flavor profile with a beautiful marbling.
- Prosciutto: This aged, paper-thin, intensely savory, and salty ham adds an element of elegance. Use sparingly, as its distinct flavor is often more appealing to adult palates.
Essential Accompaniments: Elevating Every Bite
The magic of a charcuterie board truly comes alive with its accompaniments. These elements fill in the gaps, add splashes of color, and offer contrasting flavors and textures that make each bite an adventure. Think about balancing sweet, savory, salty, and tangy for a comprehensive taste experience.
Crisp Crackers & Breads
These are the foundational vehicles for your cheeses and meats, offering a variety of textures and serving as perfect scoopers for dips and spreads:
- Round Crackers: Buttery and sturdy, crackers like Ritz or similar brands are ideal for stacking with cheese and meat.
- Square or Wheat Crackers: Add visual variety and a whole-grain option. Triscuits or Wheat Thins offer a satisfying crunch.
- Mini Pretzels: Provide a delightful salty crunch and are excellent for dipping. Consider swapping with pretzel crisps or slender breadsticks for variety.
- Additional Options: Don’t hesitate to include pita chips, mini breadsticks, thinly sliced baguette, or crostini for more textural choices.
Fresh Fruits & Vibrant Vegetables
Introduce freshness, crunch, and a healthy component, while adding bursts of festive color:
- Baby Carrots: A classic crunchy vegetable that’s a fun and healthy addition.
- Red, Yellow & Orange Bell Peppers: Slice into long, vibrant strips. These not only add color but also a satisfying crispness. Cucumber or celery sticks make excellent substitutes.
- Additional Options: Include apple slices (tossed in a little lemon juice to prevent browning), juicy red or green grapes, elegant pear slices, fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries), or a sprinkle of ruby-red pomegranate seeds for a truly festive sparkle. Dried figs or apricots offer a chewy, concentrated sweetness.
Flavorful Dips, Spreads & Sauces
These additions introduce extra layers of flavor and moisture, enhancing the entire experience. Place small bowls of these strategically throughout your charcuterie spread:
- Hummus: A creamy and savory dip that pairs wonderfully with fresh vegetables and pita chips.
- Fruit Preserves or Fig Jam: Offer a sweet counterpoint to salty meats and sharp cheeses. Fig jam is a particularly elegant choice.
- Cranberry Sauce or Fresh Cranberry Salsa: A quintessential holiday flavor that brings a festive tartness and color.
- Dijon or Whole Grain Mustard: Provides a piquant kick that beautifully complements cured meats.
- Whipped Cream Cheese or Herbed Spreads: Creamy and mild, these are great for spreading on crackers and can be infused with fresh herbs for extra flavor.
Briny Pickles & Olives
No charcuterie board is truly complete without these zesty, briny bites. They offer a refreshing contrast and cut through the richness of meats and cheeses:
- Black Olives: Versatile and mellow, great for snacking on their own or using as garnishes.
- Green Olives (Pitted): Offer a sharper, more piquant flavor.
- Pickle Chips or Spears: Provide a satisfying sour crunch.
- Pickled Red Onions: Add a beautiful color and a sweet-tart tang.
- Mini Gherkins (Cornichons): Small, tart, and crunchy, these are perfect palate cleansers.
Crunchy Nuts & Delightful Extras
Nuts offer a satisfying crunch and a boost of protein, while other small extras help fill in any remaining nooks and crannies on your board, adding to its abundant appearance:
- Almonds (Roasted or Candied): Offer a pleasant crunch. Candied almonds provide a delightful sweet and savory contrast.
- Pecans or Walnuts: Earthy and rich, these are particularly fitting for a fall or winter-themed board.
- Cashews: Buttery and smooth, a popular choice for many.
- Pumpkin Seeds (Roasted or Spiced): Adds a rustic touch and unique flavor.
- Trail Mix (Lightly Salted or Sweetened): A convenient and varied option, just ensure it’s not overly sweet or chaotic.
Pro Tips for Choosing Accompaniments
- Keep it Neat: Utilize mini bowls, ramekins, or small jars to contain dips, spreads, and wet items like olives and pickles. This prevents flavors from mingling unnecessarily and keeps the board looking tidy.
- Mix Textures: Consciously include items that are crunchy, creamy, chewy, and crispy. This variety makes each bite interesting and satisfying.
- Balance Sweet & Savory: Always aim to balance rich and salty meats and cheeses with elements of sweetness (like fruits or jams) to create a harmonious flavor profile.
- Go Seasonal: Incorporate seasonal produce to enhance the holiday theme. Cranberries, apples, pears, and pomegranates are excellent choices for winter boards.

Presentation & Serving: Making Your Board Shine
Serving your festive charcuterie board doesn’t require a special heirloom platter, though a large wooden board, slate, or marble slab certainly adds to the aesthetic. If you don’t have a traditional board, don’t worry! You can get creative. For larger gatherings, consider utilizing a clean countertop or kitchen island. Simply lay down a layer of food-safe plastic wrap or parchment paper and build your charcuterie spread directly on top. This ingenious trick provides an expansive canvas for your culinary artistry and makes cleanup incredibly easy – simply gather the wrap and toss it when the party is over. It’s a practical, simple, and perfect solution for feeding a crowd with minimal fuss.
